The Brief

We took on the exciting challenge of building Humpday from scratch, handling the entire process from development to testing. This allowed us to shape every detail of the app, ensuring a smooth and engaging user experience tailored for millennials. Humpday is a unique dating platform designed for those seeking authentic connections and wanting to move beyond traditional online dating. Built using Laravel and Flutter, the app encourages users to transition quickly from online chats to real-life (IRL) interactions. By hosting offline events where 1 in 3 attendees exchange contact details, Humpday is quickly becoming one of Australia’s most promising dating apps.

A core feature of Humpday is its city-based location input, where users can enter city names through an automatic Google place picker. Unlike traditional apps, it doesn’t include a map or tracking system for calculating distances, keeping the focus on fostering genuine connections rather than relying on proximity.

The Challenge

Humpday faced several challenges during its development, including:- 

  • Lengthy Onboarding Process: The initial onboarding process was too long, leading some users to abandon sign-up.
  • Limited Location Feature: Without a map or tracking system, users couldn’t gauge proximity to potential matches, which affected their motivation to meet in person.
  • Profile Management: Users needed more flexibility to personalize and edit their profiles during onboarding.
  • Matching Algorithm: The initial algorithm was slow and lacked accuracy, leading to less relevant matches.
  • Offline Interaction Focus: Since the app promotes real-life connections, it needed stronger integration of offline events into the app’s experience.

The Solution

To address these challenges, we implemented the following key solutions:

  • Streamlined Onboarding: We shortened the onboarding process, improving completion rates and allowing users to get matched more quickly.
  • City-Based Location Feature: While no tracking system was added, the ability to input city names via Google place picker allowed users to find matches within their area.
  • Profile Preview and Editing: Users were given the ability to preview and edit their profiles during the onboarding process, enhancing personalization and control.
  • Enhanced Matching Algorithm: We optimized the algorithm to provide faster, more relevant matches, improving overall user satisfaction.
  • Offline Event Integration: Stronger emphasis was placed on encouraging users to attend offline events, bridging the gap between online chats and real-world interactions.
